James Van Der Beek revealed in 2024 that he was undergoing treatment for colorectal cancer.
In September, he made a surprise appearance in a video during a charity reunion event. Dawson in New York, after having previously had to withdraw due to his illness.
His image had been projected on stage at the Richard Rodgers Theatre during a public reading of the pilot episode to benefit F. Cancer and James Van Der Beek. Lin-Manuel Miranda had replaced him on stage. "Thank you to everyone present here."James Van Der Beek had stated.
Forever associated with Dawson
A former child actor in the theatre, James Van Der Beek also acted in the film Varsity Blues and on television in ITUC: Cyberwhere he played FBI Special Agent Elijah Mundo. But he remained inextricably linked to Dawson, broadcast from 1998 to 2003 on The WB.
The series followed a group of high school friends discovering love, true friendship, and their place in life. James Van Der Beek, then 20 years old, played 15-year-old Dawson Leery, who aspired to become a director of Steven Spielberg's caliber.
Dawson, driven by the melancholic theme I Don't Want To Wait Paula Cole's work helped establish The WB as a leading channel for teenagers and young adults, who were drawn to its articulate dialogue and frank discussions about sexuality. It also launched the careers of James Van Der Beek, Joshua Jackson, Katie Holmes, and Michelle Williams.
The series sparked controversy when a teenager began a relationship with a teacher 20 years his senior, as well as in a scene where Katie Holmes' character climbs out of Dawson's bedroom window to cuddle with him. More daring series like Euphoria et fri Education owe a great deal to Dawson.
James Van Der Beek sometimes struggled to step out of the shadow of the series, before eventually agreeing to laugh about it, notably in Funny Or Die videos or in the music video Blow of Kesha, where he confronts the singer with a laser gun in a nightclub populated by dead unicorns.
"It's difficult to compete with a cultural phenomenon like Dawson“,” James Van Der Beek told Vulture in 2013. "The series ran for so long. That represents an enormous number of hours spent portraying a single character in front of an audience. So it's natural that people associate you with it."
A GIF that has become iconic and Varsity Blues
More than 10 years after the series ended, a scene from the end of the third season became a famous GIF. In it, Dawson watches his soulmate fall in love with his best friend and bursts into tears.

Still during Dawsonhe had animated Saturday Night Live, with Everlast as a musical guest, and obtained a prominent role in Varsity Blueswhere he played a backup high school quarterback who was promoted to starter after the star's injury.
His character, Mox, turned out to be not very passionate about football, preferring to read Kurt Vonnegut and dreaming of higher education to escape the dominant sports mentality of his Texas town. "I don't want your life!" " he shouts at one point. The critic Roger Ebert had judged him "Convincing and engaging."
A youth turned towards the theatre
Raised in Cheshire, Connecticut, James Van Der Beek began acting at age 13 after a football concussion sidelined him for a year on medical advice. He landed the role of Danny Zuko in the school production of Grease.
He continued in theatre, landing an off-Broadway role at age 16 in 1994 in Finding the Sun by Pulitzer Prize winner Edward Albee, and then by one of the sons in a revival of Shenandoah at the prestigious Goodspeed Opera House in his home state.
He had received a scholarship to Drew University in New Jersey, but left his studies earlier than planned after failing DawsonIn 2024, he returned to campus to receive an honorary degree recognizing his "selfless service and exemplary commitment to Drew's mission", according to the university.
Drew University President Hilary Link welcomed him with a famous quote from his character in Dawson : "The sharp edge is fleeting," she had declared, "but the heart lasts forever. This morning, we pay tribute to that heart."
He is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children: Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn and Jeremiah.
