A decree published in the Official Journal on Friday, August 7, paves the way for the approval of autonomous robots intended for the transport of goods. This new regulation constitutes a first step before their actual operation on French roads.
Compact and electric, these vehicles are primarily intended for short-distance deliveries. The government aims to facilitate last-mile logistics while reducing pollution and noise in urban areas.
Vehicles monitored remotely
Classified as mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles, and motorized quads, these robots will be able to travel on the road, but not on sidewalks. They can measure up to four meters long and carry a maximum load of 1,000 kilograms over several tens of kilometers.
Equipped with cameras, radar, and onboard software, they will be able to identify obstacles and follow a predefined route on their own. Their movement will nevertheless remain remotely monitored and must comply with cybersecurity and personal data protection regulations. Local authorities will decide on the zones and routes where their use will be authorized.
