More than 600 Google employees have signed a letter calling on management to stop providing its artificial intelligence technologies to the US military for classified operations. This initiative comes as the Alphabet subsidiary is reportedly in discussions with the Pentagon regarding a potential partnership, according to several sources.
Among the signatories are also company executives, reflecting a shared concern within the organization. The authors of the letter believe that there are insufficient safeguards to prevent these tools from being used for purposes that infringe upon individual liberties or that could lead to serious consequences, particularly in sensitive military contexts.
Diversification of partners under pressure
The US Department of Defense is currently seeking to diversify its AI suppliers after ending its collaboration with the startup Anthropic, a decision that has been challenged in court. An agreement has been reached with OpenAI, but its operational deployment could take several months.
Google, already a partner of the Pentagon on unclassified projects, has faced similar internal challenges in the past. In 2018, employee mobilization led the company to withdraw from Project Maven, a program for analyzing drone images using artificial intelligence.
