Shia LaBeouf was sentenced to two years of probation after pleading guilty to three counts of simple assault. The 39-year-old American actor was prosecuted for an altercation that occurred in February in New Orleans during Mardi Gras festivities.
Three people attacked outside a bar
The incident occurred on February 17th outside a bar in New Orleans. LaBeouf was accused of assaulting three people outside the establishment. Part of the scene was filmed, showing the shirtless actor pushing and hitting people present at the scene.
Six months suspended sentence
Judge Juana Marine-Lombard handed down a six-month suspended sentence, along with two years of probation. In practical terms, Shia LaBeouf will not be incarcerated if he complies with the court's conditions. If he violates his probation, he faces a prison sentence.
Mandatory treatment for alcohol and drug addiction
The actor will have to undergo an alcohol and drug treatment program, as well as anger management and awareness classes. He is also prohibited from contacting the victims and from returning to the bar in question.
Homophobic remarks
Beyond the blows, homophobic remarks were reported during the altercation. LaBeouf's defense, however, rejected the idea of a discriminatory attack, portraying the incident as a bar fight.
