The British newspaper Metro has apologized to J.K. Rowling after wrongly accusing her of Holocaust denial. This claim appeared in an article about the upcoming television adaptation of the Harry Potter saga.
The accusation referred to posts the author shared on social media in 2024. In them, J.K. Rowling challenged certain claims regarding the treatment of transgender people under the Nazi regime. The newspaper has since acknowledged that these comments did not support a Holocaust denial stance.
A completely withdrawn accusation
Metro removed the offending wording from its article and published a correction. The newspaper also issued a separate apology on its homepage, acknowledging that the accusation was false and should never have been published.
The incident comes amid ongoing controversies surrounding J.K. Rowling's views on sex and gender identity. Regularly criticized by activists and some figures in the cultural world, the author remains a prominent voice in British public debate. In this case, however, the newspaper unconditionally withdrew its accusation.
