A Chinese military court on Thursday, May 7, sentenced former defense ministers Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu to death with a stay of execution. The two generals, arrested three years ago while holding key positions in the Central Military Commission, were found guilty of corruption. These are the harshest sentences ever handed down to high-ranking military officials since the launch of the sweeping anti-corruption campaign orchestrated by the president. Xi Jinping in 2012.
A life sentence with no hope of release
After a two-year reprieve, the death sentence will automatically be commuted to life imprisonment. Convicted prisoners will not be eligible for any sentence reduction or parole. This procedure, common in the Chinese judicial system for major crimes, guarantees imprisonment without hope of release.
Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu were both detained in 2023, at a time when they still held strategic positions within the Chinese military. Their dramatic downfall demonstrates the regime's determination to purge the military of all forms of corruption, even at the highest levels. Xi Jinping's campaign continues to target figures who were once untouchable.
