Former Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard was found guilty of sexual assault by a Montreal court on Monday, July 13. The 84-year-old Finnish-Canadian is already serving an 11-year prison sentence in Ontario for multiple sexual assaults and also faces charges in the United States related to sex trafficking and racketeering.
Appearing via videoconference from his correctional facility, Peter Nygard did not present a defense, a possibility provided for under Canadian law. Consequently, the court found him guilty without holding the initially scheduled ten-day trial. His sentence in this new case will be determined at a later date.
A new conviction before possible extradition
Regarding events dating back to 1997 and 1998, Peter Nygard was found guilty of sexually assaulting and confining an 18-year-old woman in his Montreal residence. The complainant, who was present at the hearing, ultimately did not have to testify due to the accused's guilty plea.
Peter Nygard, founder of one of Canada's largest women's clothing manufacturers before his company went bankrupt, has been incarcerated since December 2020. After being sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2024 for sexual assaults committed against four women, he also remains under threat of extradition to the United States, where he is being prosecuted in federal court in New York on nine counts, including racketeering and alleged sex trafficking between 1990 and 2020.
