Sexual violence allegations: Gérard Darmon withdraws from the La Ciotat First Film Festival

Gérard Darmon will ultimately not preside over the jury of the La Ciotat First Film Festival in Bouches-du-Rhône. The actor, targeted by the testimonies of nine women accusing him of sexist and sexual violence, withdrew from this role just days before the opening of the event, scheduled from June 10 to 14.

A withdrawal to avoid a crisis surrounding the festival

The decision follows the controversy surrounding his appointment. The festival organizers stated that they acknowledge Gérard Darmon's withdrawal, presented as a decision intended to preserve the event's peaceful atmosphere. The actor was slated to hold a significant symbolic position: that of jury president at a festival dedicated to debut films.

A nomination that turned explosive

The choice of Gérard Darmon sparked strong reactions, particularly from feminist groups. They contested the actor's inclusion in the jury, given the numerous accusations against him that had been made public. For these organizations, appointing someone under scrutiny as jury president sent a problematic message, especially within the film industry, which is already grappling with numerous debates surrounding sexist and sexual violence.

Nine women at the heart of the case

The accusations against Gérard Darmon are based on the testimonies of nine women. They describe inappropriate remarks and gestures that allegedly occurred on several film sets between 2018 and 2024. The testimonies specifically mention humiliation, sexist insults, and a climate of insecurity felt by some female professionals. Gérard Darmon denies the allegations against him.

Jean-Pierre Améris resumes the presidency of the jury

Following Gérard Darmon's withdrawal, director Jean-Pierre Améris agreed to preside over the jury. This appointment should allow the festival to maintain its edition and refocus attention on its program, as the controversy threatened to overshadow the event.
