A new legal phase has begun in the sensitive case of vaginal implants. Seventy-one women claiming to suffer serious medical complications have filed a complaint with a civil claim, a procedure that could lead to the appointment of an investigating judge after the Paris prosecutor's office closed the initial investigation without further action.
The plaintiffs allege serious physical and psychological consequences linked to these medical devices used between 1994 and 2022. The complaint specifically targets acts of aggravated deception, involuntary injury, endangering others and willful failure to prevent harm to bodily integrity.
The plaintiffs accuse the manufacturers of having downplayed the risks
The plaintiffs' lawyers believe that the manufacturers concealed the risks associated with these implants, including complications that can occur after the operation and difficulties related to removing the devices in case of pain or serious side effects.
Several women report chronic pain, urinary problems, difficulty walking or sitting, and heavy financial consequences after corrective operations, sometimes carried out abroad.
Health authorities are also being targeted
The plaintiffs also call into question the role of public bodies and health authorities, accused of not having sufficiently controlled the medical practices and devices concerned despite the warnings that have appeared in several countries in recent years.
In December 2024, the public prosecutor's office concluded that no regulatory breaches had been demonstrated against the manufacturers or certification bodies. The victims now hope that an independent investigating judge will reopen the investigation into this case, which their lawyers consider a genuine international health scandal.
