Sales of FFP2 and surgical masks have surged in France in recent days amid concerns about the Andean hantavirus. Demand for FFP2 masks has increased fivefold in less than a week, while demand for surgical masks has quadrupled in several pharmacy and distribution networks.
Passengers urgently repatriated to Paris
This surge in purchases comes after the medical evacuation of five French nationals aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, which was affected by several suspected cases of hantavirus during a South American voyage. The passengers were admitted to Bichat Hospital under close observation to prevent any risk of further spread.
Among them, one person tested positive for the Andean hantavirus and is currently in intensive care in serious condition. Health authorities are closely monitoring those who have been in contact with the infected patient, although the risk of transmission is still considered limited and very different from the major respiratory epidemics of recent years.
A concern fueled by the memory of Covid
The announcement of this hospitalization quickly revived certain reactions observed during the Covid-19 pandemic. In several French pharmacies, temporary shortages of masks have already been reported, particularly in the Paris region. Searches related to hantavirus have also increased significantly on the internet and social media.
The Andean hantavirus is a rare strain identified primarily in South America, particularly in Argentina and Chile. Unlike other hantaviruses transmitted only by rodents, this variant has already shown, in some cases, a limited capacity for transmission between humans, which explains the heightened vigilance of international health authorities.
Health authorities are calling for calm
At this stage, no outbreak has been identified in France. Authorities reiterate that hantavirus remains a rare disease and that the isolation protocols applied to evacuated patients are specifically designed to prevent any spread of the virus. Investigations are nevertheless continuing to trace the contacts of the ship's passengers and understand the exact circumstances of the contamination aboard the MV Hondius.
The Ministry of Health and several infectious disease specialists also insist that there is currently no evidence to suggest a situation comparable to that of Covid-19. However, the rapid media coverage of the case demonstrates how health issues continue to provoke strong collective reactions as soon as a new infectious risk emerges.
