Suicide attempts: more than 84,000 hospitalizations recorded in 2025

Hospitalizations related to suicide attempts and self-harm increased again in France in 2025, according to the latest data published by Drees, the statistical service of the social ministries. More than 84,000 people aged 10 and over were admitted to hospital after self-inflicted harm, compared to approximately 82,000 the previous year.

Adolescent girls and young women remain the most affected by this decline. Women represent nearly two-thirds of hospitalized patients, or 64% of recorded cases. This trend is part of an increase observed for several years, particularly marked among minors and young adults.

Young people's mental health is increasingly fragile

Health professionals regularly warn of the worsening psychological distress among young people, in a context marked by anxiety, social isolation, and difficulties related to studies or precarious living conditions. Several specialists also highlight the impact of social media and the psychological pressure exerted on adolescents.

These new statistics reinforce concerns about psychiatric care in France, as hospitals and specialized facilities face increasing demand. For several months, health authorities have been calling for strengthened prevention and psychological support for the most vulnerable populations.
