Public Health France maintains close vigilance regarding the Maripa virus in French Guiana

First identified in French Guiana in 2008, the Maripa virus continues to be subject to heightened surveillance by health authorities despite a limited number of reported infections. This hantavirus, transmitted to humans by wild rodents, causes a rare but potentially serious form of respiratory syndrome, with several deaths recorded since its appearance in the territory.

Since the discovery of the first human case, reported outbreaks remain sporadic but concerning due to their high mortality rate. Public Health France indicates that eleven cases have been detected in French Guiana since 2008, six of which were fatal. Infections occur primarily after exposure to dust contaminated by the droppings of infected rodents living in open areas or near homes.

Scientists, however, point out that the spread is slower and less explosive than that observed for other emerging viruses in the Amazon. Investigations conducted in recent years around several cases have revealed the likely existence of past or mildly symptomatic infections, suggesting wider circulation of the virus without major epidemic outbreaks.

Teams from the Pasteur Institute of French Guiana, the Regional Health Agency (ARS), and the Cayenne Hospital Center are continuing field studies to better understand the transmission mechanisms and at-risk areas. Health authorities are particularly emphasizing preventative measures such as cleaning contaminated sites and limiting contact with wild rodents, given that environmental changes could lead to the emergence of new cases.
