Reusable menstrual products: reimbursement conditions clarified

From October 1st, certain reusable menstrual panties and cups will be covered by health insurance. This will apply to women under 26 years of age as well as those covered by the supplementary solidarity health insurance scheme, potentially reaching 6,7 million people.

To be eligible, menstrual underwear must have at least three layers: a drainage layer made of organic cotton or lyocell, an absorbent layer, and a waterproof layer to prevent leaks. It must also withstand a minimum of 52 washes at 30°C and offer an absorbency capacity of at least 12 milliliters.

Coverage is limited to two products per year.

Manufacturers will be required to offer at least eight different sizes of period underwear and two sizes of menstrual cups. Coverage will be limited to two products per year, dispensed in pharmacies. For those under 26, national health insurance will reimburse between 55% and 65% of the price, with the remainder potentially covered by supplemental health insurance.

These criteria are already being criticized by some French manufacturers, who consider the requirement of 52 washes insufficient and fear increased competition from products made in Asia. The selling price set at €14,40 excluding VAT could also weaken brands producing in France, whose manufacturing costs are higher.
