The Mayotte Regional Health Agency has published the first results of the EpiMay 2025 study on adult population immunity to measles. The data shows that 85% of people aged 18 and over have immunity against this highly contagious disease. While this level reflects significant vaccination coverage in the territory, it remains below national recommendations, which stipulate a minimum threshold of 95% to guarantee effective herd protection.
This ten-point gap compared to the national target raises health concerns for the archipelago. Measles, which can spread rapidly in under-vaccinated populations, represents an increased risk when the herd immunity rate does not reach the critical threshold. Health authorities are using this new data to adjust their prevention strategy and strengthen vaccination campaigns.
A worrying gap with national objectives
The results of this epidemiological study will help identify the most vulnerable populations and guide public health actions. The national vaccination strategy sets ambitious goals to eradicate the circulation of the virus throughout France. Mayotte, with its specific demographic and geographic characteristics, requires a tailored approach to address the existing delays and achieve the recommended protection standards.
