Faced with a shortage of doctors in some rural areas, the Finistère department has launched a mobile medical clinic in the Monts d'Arrée. Called "Médicobus," this service aims to improve access to consultations for residents of areas particularly affected by the shortage of healthcare professionals.
The vehicle, which will enter service at the end of 2025, operates several days a week between the towns of Brasparts, Huelgoat, and Scrignac. On board, a team of three doctors and an advanced practice nurse provides general medical consultations as well as gynecological appointments.
A system for very under-resourced areas
In this area of central Brittany, the medical situation is particularly strained. Some towns have only two doctors for approximately 8,000 inhabitants, putting significant pressure on existing practitioners and creating an obstacle for many patients.
Funded by the department with an investment of approximately €230,000, the Médicobus has already provided consultations to over 200 people. Local authorities hope that this mobile clinic, which complements existing teleconsultation and medical follow-up services, will help reduce inequalities in access to healthcare in rural areas.
