“Unlike Covid”: Agnès Buzyn praises the authorities’ caution in the face of hantavirus

Agnès Buzyn praised the cautious management of the hantavirus by French health authorities, noting that the current communication contrasts sharply with that observed during the Covid-19 pandemic. Interviewed by franceinfo, the former Minister of Health deemed it "appropriate" that scientists and public officials now acknowledge the "uncertainty and doubt" surrounding the virus.

According to the former Minister of Health, what is most striking about this health crisis is the attitude of media experts. "Unlike the Covid period, when everyone was peremptory," she believes that specialists appearing on television are this time much more cautious in their analyses and recommendations.

Vigilance maintained for six weeks

The former minister nevertheless calls for continued caution throughout the incubation period for contact cases, estimated at six weeks for the Andean hantavirus. Several French nationals evacuated from the MV Hondius ship remain under enhanced medical observation following the emergence of suspected cases linked to the virus.

The Andean hantavirus, primarily found in South America, is attracting particular attention because it is one of the few hantaviruses that have already demonstrated limited human-to-human transmission capabilities. At this stage, however, French health authorities assure that no outbreaks have been detected in the country.
