In response to the resurgence of chikungunya in French Guiana, the French National Authority for Health (HAS) recommends the use of the Vimkunya vaccine for those most at risk of severe illness. Since the beginning of the year, 81 cases have been confirmed, raising concerns about a new outbreak in a territory where herd immunity remains limited.
Vaccination is primarily recommended for people aged 65 and over, as well as for those aged 12 to 64 with comorbidities. The vaccine may also be offered, under certain conditions, to adults without risk factors, taking into account, in particular, the limited duration of protection and the lack of data for certain profiles.
Restrictions remain in place for other vaccines
Regarding the Ixchiq vaccine, the HAS (French National Authority for Health) has restricted its use to individuals aged 18 to 64, following an individual assessment, due to insufficient safety data. It remains particularly discouraged for the elderly, following the suspension of its use after reports of serious adverse effects.
Health authorities specify that certain situations, such as pregnancy or breastfeeding, require a case-by-case analysis. An update of the recommendations is expected in the coming weeks for other overseas territories, as well as a national vaccination strategy in the coming months.
