Construction and public works employees are significantly more exposed to occupational hazards than other workers, according to a study by Public Health France. The agency estimates that they are three to ten times more affected by certain nuisances such as noise and pollutants.
The sector, which employs approximately 1,5 million people, accounts for a significant proportion of workplace accidents. Between 2019 and 2022, it represented 15% of accidents resulting in lost work time and 20% of work-related deaths.
Particularly hazardous working conditions
The study highlights high exposure to noise, affecting more than six out of ten workers, as well as to silica dust, solvents, and wood dust. These factors increase the risk of occupational illnesses and long-term health problems.
In light of these findings, Public Health France is calling for strengthened prevention and medical monitoring, particularly for those most at risk, such as manual laborers and tradespeople. The agency emphasizes that reducing these exposures is a major public health challenge.
