The Discord chat platform has announced the implementation, starting in early March, of a widespread age verification system. All accounts, both old and new, will now be considered minors by default, with associated access restrictions.
Users wishing to access adult content or areas will need to verify their age. The "teen" mode will limit the display of sensitive content, access to certain servers and features, and the receipt of private messages from unknown senders.
Facial recognition or ID to prove age
To verify age, Discord offers several methods, including a video selfie analyzed by a facial recognition tool or the submission of an ID through specialized providers. The platform states that the data used for this verification will be deleted once the check is complete.
A behavioral analysis system will also be able, in certain cases, to automatically assign adult status without any further action required. Already tested in the United Kingdom and Australia, this system will be gradually rolled out globally.
