Pierre-Emmanuel Barré denied the SACD Humor Prize after wishing death upon Gabriel Attal and Sophia Aram on Nova

The Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers has decided to reconsider the awarding of its 2026 Humor Prize to Pierre-Emmanuel Barré. The comedian, a prominent figure on Radio Nova and a commentator on the show The LastHe was due to receive this award in June. The decision was ultimately overturned after a column deemed incompatible with the values of the SACD.

A column from May 10th that sparked controversy

The turning point dates back to May 10th, during a segment broadcast on Radio Nova in The Last, a show hosted by Guillaume Meurice. Pierre-Emmanuel Barré started with the theme of Eurovision before directly targeting Gabriel Attal and then Sophia Aram, with very violent language.

Barré wishes Gabriel Attal cancer and Sophia Aram a car accident

In his radio segment on Radio Nova, Pierre-Emmanuel Barré directly attacked Gabriel Attal and Sophia Aram, making comments explicitly suggesting their deaths. The comedian first targeted the former Prime Minister, mentioning pancreatic cancer. He then turned on Sophia Aram, imagining a car accident and wishing she would become colorblind and jaywalk. These statements, presented in a dark humor tone, were deemed particularly shocking by the SACD (French Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers of Music), which considered them to go beyond satire and to be tantamount to wishing for the demise of public figures.

SACD sets a red line

In the letter addressed to the comedian, the SACD explains that it cannot condone remarks that it considers to be... "Incitement to hatred and violence", considering them contrary to the principles of an authors' society. The organization therefore reversed a decision that had initially been unanimously supported by its board.

Pierre-Emmanuel Barré responds with irony

Pierre-Emmanuel Barré reacted on X by publishing the SACD's letter, accompanied by a brief comment: “Ah la la la. Cancel culture »The comedian presented the episode as a "A drama in two acts", drawing a parallel between the initial announcement of the price and its withdrawal.

A symbolic sanction, not a ban from broadcasting

The SACD's decision does not concern the broadcast of the program or Pierre-Emmanuel Barré's presence on Radio Nova. It relates solely to the withdrawal of an honorary award.

This controversy raises a recurring question: how far can humor go when it targets public figures? In this case, the SACD ruled that Pierre-Emmanuel Barré's remarks no longer amounted to mere satirical provocation, but crossed a line into verbal violence.
