Bertrand Chameroy's misogynistic column: Olivier Galzi sets him straight live on France Inter

Tempers flared on France Inter radio Tuesday morning. Avignon's new mayor, Olivier Galzi, a guest on the morning show, sharply rebuked comedian Bertrand Chameroy after a remark deemed inappropriate about his wife, who is also a deputy mayor. Referring to municipal allowances, the commentator insinuated that the mayor was financially "doing well" thanks to his wife's salary and "a joint account," triggering an immediate reaction.

Interrupting the discussion, Olivier Galzi denounced an "outdated misogyny," condemning a view that reduces a woman, especially an elected official, to her partner. This outburst was deemed "scandalous" by the former journalist, now mayor of Avignon, who emphasized that his wife holds full political office, independent of their private life.

At the heart of the controversy is a decision that the mayor nevertheless stands by: lowering his own allowance by 14% while increasing those of his deputies by 35%, in order to allow profiles from civil society to fully engage. He justifies this measure by the need to have "real people" in politics, far removed from traditional profiles.
