Pepsi has just unveiled its Super Bowl commercial, scheduled for February 9th. And it's safe to say it's a knockout! The campaign features the polar bear an iconic figure associated for decades with its competitor Coca-ColaIn this scenario, the animal participates in a blind taste test opposing Pepsi Zero Sugar à Coke Zero Sugar. After tasting both drinks, the bear chose Pepsi, thus surprising viewers and reigniting the confrontation between the two soda giants during one of the most watched televised events in the world.
A brilliantly bold choice
The 30-second spot, directed by Academy Award winner Taika Waititi, shows a polar bear blindfolded and faced with two cans of Pepsi. His surprise after choosing Pepsi is central to the plot. The ad then incorporates subtle humor, with the bear consulting a therapist played by Waititi, before observing Pepsi drinkers and encountering another bear, culminating in a spectacular final scene at a concert.
Historically associated with Coca-Cola since the brand's winter campaigns, the polar bear is used here strategically by Pepsi, which wants to send a strong message: after years of drinking Coca-Cola, the bear finally realizes that he was wrong and that Pepsi is better!
The Pepsi Challenge revisited
This advertisement is reminiscent of the Pepsi Challenge, blind taste tests popularized since the 1970s. The goal is to reposition Pepsi as the best choice. Data also shows that Pepsi Zero Sugar is experiencing sales growth in the sugar-free cola category, even though Coca-Cola remains the market leader.
In any case, the Pepsi ad generated a strong reaction on social media. The use of the bear, similar to the wolf in the Intermarché ad, sparked real enthusiasm. More than ever, the "soda wars" are in full swing!
