The magazine Causeur is fighting for its survival. In an appeal published on September 9, its founder and editor-in-chief, Élisabeth Lévy, announced that the magazine must raise €120,000 by September 25 to avoid possible closure. The journalist's assessment is blunt: "Since the beginning of the Causeur adventure in 2007, we have never been so close to closing our doors. THIS IS AN SOS!"
The financial situation of many media outlets remains fragile. Elisabeth Lévy, in particular, had been in the news in recent months through her appearances on CNews , where she regularly appears as a commentator.
120,000 euros to be found before September 25th
Élisabeth Lévy explains that Causeur 's financial difficulties have worsened significantly since 2022. The magazine is facing both declining sales and rising costs. According to its director, the situation is all the more precarious because the publication lacks both substantial advertising revenue to absorb losses and sufficient cash reserves to weather unforeseen events in the long term.
“We’re not sitting idly by. We’re working tirelessly to find new sources of revenue. But to invent the future, we have to secure the present ,” explains Élisabeth Lévy. To achieve this, Causeur has set a specific goal: to raise €120,000 by September 25th.
Causeur is looking for 120 donors willing to contribute 1,000 euros
The magazine hopes to convince 120 "super-donors" to each contribute 1,000 euros . Causeur states that after tax deductions are applied, the actual cost of the donation would be reduced to approximately 340 euros for each contributor.
In exchange, these donors would become permanent members of the "Friends of Causeur" society. Starting in early 2027, they would be able to communicate regularly with the editorial staff and Élisabeth Lévy. Meetings with prominent figures from the intellectual, political, and economic spheres would also be organized in several French cities.
"We are not just offering you funding for civic conversation, we are offering you the opportunity to participate directly in it ," the journalist promises.
"We need you"
Founded in 2007, Causeur claims a right-wing editorial line, but defines itself more precisely as a journal "of a mischievous, offbeat, libertarian, slightly punk right wing ." Élisabeth Lévy also defends a media outlet committed to debate and the confrontation of ideas, far removed from what she considers ideological insularity.
The journalist, who is also a commentator on CNews and Sud Radio, is one of the media figures regularly associated with this school of thought. Ivan Rioufol, an editorialist for Causeur and CNews, notably gave a lengthy interview about Marine Le Pen, Jordan Bardella, and Boualem Sansal.
This time, the stakes are directly financial. Without the €120,000 sought, Élisabeth Lévy is clearly raising the possibility of the magazine's demise. Her appeal therefore ends as it began: with a direct request to the readers. "You are our friends. We need you. And we want to believe that you need us."
