Laurent Nuñez claims he wants to respond point by point to the Minister of Justice, without fueling controversy between the two ministries. He specifically disputes the number of cases that were allegedly lost or left unprocessed. The twelve-page memo has provoked anger from several police organizations, some accusing Gérald Darmanin, the former Minister of the Interior, of betraying law enforcement.
A note written after the Lyhanna affair
The document from the Ministry of Justice compiles the shortcomings identified by the public prosecutor's offices in the handling of complaints of sexual violence against minors. It notably mentions cases not forwarded to the courts, lost documents, abandoned investigations, and insufficient training for some staff members.
This initiative comes after the death of Lyhanna, an 11-year-old middle school student found dead in June in the Gers region. The main suspect, Jérôme Barella, has been charged with rape and murder of a minor. He had previously been the subject of several complaints of sexual violence against minors without being prosecuted, a situation that led the Ministry of Justice to examine potential shortcomings in the follow-up to these reports.
