Sophia Chikirou, a member of parliament for La France Insoumise and partner of Jean-Luc Mélenchon, appeared before the Paris Criminal Court on Tuesday, May 12. The former mayoral candidate is being prosecuted for fraud and check fraud in a case linked to Le Média, the online media outlet she co-founded. The alleged events date back to 2018 and involve an attempted embezzlement of over €67,000. Sophia Chikirou categorically denies these accusations.

According to the prosecution, the elected official allegedly attempted to transfer funds from a company she no longer managed at the time. Two checks were also reportedly misappropriated. The MP's defense argues that the case involves neither victims nor actual harm. The precise circumstances of these alleged fraudulent financial transactions will be examined at the hearing that opens today in the capital.

This court appearance comes as Sophia Chikirou has been a member of the National Assembly since 2022. The court will have to determine whether the alleged acts constitute a clear case of attempted fraud or whether, as she maintains, it is a case built on flimsy foundations. The verdict in this trial could have repercussions for the political career of the Île-de-France MP.
