Trial of winemaker accused of insulting Sandrine Rousseau: tensions in Carcassonne

The Carcassonne Criminal Court will try this Friday, March 28, a winemaker from the Aude region accused of making a sexist insult against Sandrine Rousseau during a political trip in June 2023. The Green Party MP has confirmed her presence at the hearing, while a rally in support of the defendant is planned in front of the courthouse.

A sexist insult that provokes a reaction

The incident dates back to a visit by Green Party representatives Sandrine Rousseau and Marine Tondelier to Fontiers-Cabardès, in the Aude department, to support the opposition to a luxury golf course project. Upon their arrival, a committee of farmers was waiting for them. One of them allegedly shouted at Sandrine Rousseau: "Go make the soup, bitch." The Parisian representative believes that this statement, beyond being an insult, amounts to sexism punishable by law. "This is no way to conduct politics. There is a democratic framework to preserve, otherwise we descend into savagery," she declared.

Mobilization in both camps

The case is sparking a massive turnout. While the Confédération Paysanne (Farmers' Confederation) is calling for support for Sandrine Rousseau "against sexist remarks" starting at 8:30 a.m. in court, the Aude winegrowers' union is also planning a rally to defend the accused winegrower. The trial, scheduled for 9 a.m., promises to be a tense one, at the crossroads of political, feminist, and agricultural struggles.
