Emmanuel Macron has directly intervened in the debate surrounding soaring fuel prices. In a message published Wednesday evening on X, the President of the Republic asserted that he is taking diplomatic action to secure France's oil supplies and attempt to limit the pressure on prices at the pump.
“When oil prices are under pressure, prices at the pump rise. I know what this means for the French people,” the president wrote. Emmanuel Macron stated that, following his discussions with the Iraqi prime minister earlier in the week, he had also spoken with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia and the Emir of Qatar.
The Strait of Hormuz at the heart of concerns
The stated objective of the Élysée Palace is, in particular, to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic passage for global oil transport, but also to protect the energy infrastructure of France 's partners and secure their production. According to Emmanuel Macron, Paris is also working on developing alternative routes to reduce dependence on this passage.
“More oil routes mean less dependence. Less dependence means greater security. And greater security means less pressure on prices,” the President of the Republic summarized. The situation in the Middle East and the disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz have contributed in recent months to maintaining significant pressure on oil prices and, consequently, on the prices paid by French motorists.
This intervention comes as fuel prices have once again become a major political issue. Emmanuel Macron is prioritizing a diplomatic response and securing the oil supply: "To reduce tensions. To secure oil. To lower the pressure on prices at the pump. That is also part of protecting the French people," he concludes.
