President Emmanuel Macron has warned that France will not tolerate "any attempt at foreign interference" in the 2027 presidential election. The head of state intends to guarantee an election organized in a calm environment, as several political figures have recently been targeted by disinformation campaigns.
This statement comes in particular after the broadcast of a fake news report targeting Raphaël Glucksmann and his partner, Léa Salamé. The Paris prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into this operation, which has been attributed to the pro-Russian network Storm-1516. Édouard Philippe and Gabriel Attal were also the targets of false information regarding their health.
A reinforced security plan before the election
The government had already warned in June of "serious threats" that could affect the presidential election. An independent commission has since been created to detect foreign operations, inform the candidates involved, and, if necessary, publicly warn voters. It will also be able to refer the facts to the courts.
French authorities are paying particular attention to manipulations disseminated on social media, doctored images, and cyberattacks targeting political parties. Emmanuel Macron, who will not be able to run for a third consecutive term, affirms that he will remain the guarantor of the proper conduct of the elections until the end of his presidency.
