Presidential election 2027: Bruno Retailleau officially nominated as candidate by LR members

It is now official: former Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau will be the Les Républicains candidate for the 2027 presidential election. Following the vote organized this weekend, the party's approximately 76,000 members overwhelmingly chose to directly elect their president, thus ruling out the option of a primary.

This internal vote offered three scenarios: a closed primary reserved for party members, a semi-open primary for supporters, or an immediate nomination. It was this last option that prevailed, confirming the strategy of Bruno Retailleau, who had already declared his candidacy several weeks prior and was the only real contender within the party.

This choice allows the leader of the Republicans (LR) to gain precious time in the race for the Élysée Palace. In a party still marked by divisions and past failures, the members have clearly prioritized clarity and unity around a single candidate.
