Presidential election 2027: 500 local elected officials are pushing Gabriel Attal towards the Élysée Palace

Some 500 mayors and local elected officials have published an open letter calling on Gabriel Attal to run in the 2027 presidential election. The text, published by La Tribune Dimanche, marks a new stage in the political rise of the former Prime Minister within the central bloc.

Among the signatories are several prominent figures from the presidential majority and influential local elected officials, such as Renaud Muselier, Thomas Cazenave, and Franck Riester. Attal's supporters believe he possesses "the strength of experience" and "the ability to act" in a political context they consider particularly unstable.

A campaign already well underway

Even though he hasn't officially announced his candidacy, Gabriel Attal has been making numerous political appearances, holding public meetings, and signing books for his book published this spring for several weeks. A major rally is planned for May 30th in Paris, where a more explicit statement about 2027 is expected.

The Renaissance party is now openly urging its former prime minister to enter the presidential race. His entourage even asserts that this appeal from 500 elected officials "is just the beginning" and that other supporters are expected to join the platform in the coming weeks.

A battle already underway in the Macron camp

This show of support comes as the battle for the legacy of Macronism intensifies. Gabriel Attal is gradually trying to assert himself against Édouard Philippe, who remains, for the moment, the best-placed candidate of the centrist bloc in opinion polls.

The figure of "500 elected officials" also carries strong symbolic weight: it corresponds precisely to the number of endorsements required to officially run in the French presidential election. This is a way for Attal's supporters to demonstrate their desire to bolster his presidential stature less than a year before the election.
