Tensions between the Socialist Party and La France Insoumise continue to surface in the lead-up to the 2027 presidential election. At the launch of the new socialist think tank Noûs on Monday in Paris, the Socialist Party's first secretary, Olivier Faure, delivered a direct response to Jean-Luc Mélenchon, arguing that the "New France" project championed by the leader of La France Insoumise could not be built on a logic of perpetual confrontation. This stance illustrates the persistent divisions within the French left, despite repeated calls for unity against the right and far right.
The controversy arose from the presence of former Paris police prefect Didier Lallement among the guests at the opening night event. A controversial figure due to his handling of the Yellow Vest protests and other social movements, the former high-ranking official provoked strong reactions from La France Insoumise (France Unbowed). Jean-Luc Mélenchon, in particular, took to social media to criticize the participation of someone who, for a segment of the radical left, remains the symbol of a particularly repressive approach to policing.
Nous, the intellectual showcase of the Socialist Party
Faced with criticism, Olivier Faure defended the very principle of the new think tank launched by the Socialist Party. Named Nous, in reference to the Greek concept of intelligence or mind, this think tank aims to become a space for reflection open to diverse, even contradictory, viewpoints. For the Socialist leader, the confrontation of perspectives is essential for the renewal of political thought and should not be equated with endorsing the positions of the invited speakers.
The Socialist Party leader criticized La France Insoumise for systematically seeking to polarize public debate. According to him, the strategy of constantly pitting irreconcilable camps against each other undermines the prospects for a left-wing coalition. Olivier Faure argued that the credibility of a project to transform the country, on the contrary, depends on the ability to engage in dialogue with diverse stakeholders and to accept a plurality of opinions.
An implicit critique of Mélenchon's method
Beyond the controversy surrounding Didier Lallement, Olivier Faure's speech was aimed more broadly at Jean-Luc Mélenchon's political methods. Without naming him directly on several occasions, he criticized organizations where thought is heavily centralized around a dominant figure. This was a clear reference to the Institut La Boétie, the think tank created by La France Insoumise, which he contrasted with his vision of an intellectual space that fosters open debate.
The Socialist Party's first secretary also called on his party to engage in a form of introspection. Acknowledging the decline of socialist influence in recent years, he deemed it necessary to examine the mistakes made and the reasons that led a segment of the working-class electorate to turn away from the traditional left. This reflection is one of the stated objectives of Nous, which aims to contribute to the ideological reconstruction of the social-democratic camp.
A left wing still divided before 2027
This latest clash comes as the battle for the 2027 presidential election is already beginning to shape the balance of power on the left. Jean-Luc Mélenchon has officially launched his campaign and is making numerous pronouncements on major institutional, social, and territorial issues. For its part, the Socialist Party is seeking to rebuild an independent political platform after several years of dominance by La France Insoumise within the left.
Despite some agreement on certain social and environmental issues, deep strategic differences remain between the two parties. The launch of Noûs and the criticisms voiced by Olivier Faure demonstrate the Socialist Party's desire to reaffirm its own identity and challenge Jean-Luc Mélenchon's monopoly on the left-wing opposition in the run-up to the presidential election.
