Éric Coquerel is calling for the examination of a supplementary budget bill as soon as Parliament reconvenes, in order to increase funding for firefighting. The left-wing chairman of the Finance Committee believes the government cannot wait until the 2027 budget to order new equipment and strengthen prevention measures.
The MP proposes, among other things, taxing multinationals that have made exceptional profits in the context of the war in Iran. He specifically mentions TotalEnergies, which he wants to impose a contribution of two billion euros on. According to him, this solution would finance part of the needs without placing the entire burden on public finances.
An extraordinary session of Parliament has been requested
Éric Coquerel had already requested a budget amendment in April to address the economic consequences of the conflict in the Middle East, and again in June to fund measures against the heatwave. He specifically wanted to equip more nursing homes, schools, and hospitals with cooling systems, while also anticipating the needs of firefighting services.
The Prime Minister's office believes such a bill has little chance of being adopted, as La France Insoumise (LFI) usually votes against government budgets. The MP nevertheless calls on the various political groups to demonstrate "pragmatism" in the face of the emergency. He also plans to launch a task force in September to quantify the needs, which he already estimates at several billion euros, and is calling for an extraordinary parliamentary session if the situation continues to deteriorate.
