Emmanuel Macron Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam is received at the Élysée Palace on Tuesday, amid high tension in Lebanon marked by a fragile ceasefire and recent violence targeting international forces.

This meeting comes in the wake of the death of a French soldier serving with UNIFIL, killed in an attack attributed to Hezbollah. The head of state intends to ask the Lebanese authorities to fully investigate this incident and prosecute those responsible.

Support conditional on reforms and stability

At the heart of the discussions were also the humanitarian situation, marked by the displacement of populations, and the expected efforts in terms of economic and financial reforms to revive the country. Paris reaffirmed its commitment to the territorial integrity of Lebanon and the consolidation of its state authority.

France also insists on the need to guarantee the safety of peacekeeping forces, engaged in difficult conditions in the south of the country, and on strict respect for the ceasefire in force.
