The Socialist Party is launching Nous, a new think tank, in an attempt to reclaim the realm of ideas.

With less than a year to go before the 2027 presidential election, the Socialist Party is attempting to revive its intellectual influence with the creation of Noûs, a think tank whose name, borrowed from ancient Greek, means "mind" or "intelligence." This initiative comes at a time when the Socialist Party is still struggling to regain the political weight it once held on the national stage.

Presented as a think tank tasked with informing the party's policy thinking, Noûs aims to produce analyses, reports, and proposals on major contemporary issues. Its leaders claim to want to wage the "cultural battle" against what they describe as a growing "far-right neo-conservatism" in the public debate.

From ideas to the ballot box

Behind this stated intention also lies the recognition of a lasting weakening of the Socialist Party's ideological influence. Long a structuring force on the left, the PS has seen its political space shrink in recent years to the benefit of other parties, while many debates on immigration, security, and identity have shifted to terrain more favorable to the right and far right.

With Noûs, the Socialists hope to regain the intellectual initiative. It remains to be seen whether a new think tank will be enough to bridge the gap between the party's theoretical output and an electorate that has largely abandoned it for several elections. Because beyond concepts and reports, it is above all the Socialist Party's ability to convince the French people that it will have to demonstrate in the coming months.
