The national congress of the Socialist Party will be held from June 13 to 15, 2025, preceded by two votes by members: on May 27 to determine the party's political line and on June 5 to elect the first secretary. Olivier Faure, in office since 2018, will seek a new mandate to "cut the line", while the PS remains fractured between its wing in favor of union with La France insoumise (LFI) and its opponents, supporters of a break.
At the previous congress in Marseille in 2023, Olivier Faure narrowly won against Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, now first delegated secretary. The latter could return to the battle to oppose any alliance with LFI, just like Hélène Geoffroy, mayor of Vaulx-en-Velin and historic adversary of Faure.
Former president François Hollande , now back in parliament, is campaigning for a change of leadership and could support a candidate advocating a clean break with La France Insoumise (LFI). Other prominent figures within the party, such as MP Philippe Brun and the president of the Socialist group in the National Assembly, Boris Vallaud, could also enter the race.
After marking a reformist turn by negotiating with the Bayrou government on the budget and refusing to vote for censure, Olivier Faure is trying to bring together François Hollande's left wing with the radical left. But he will have to deal with growing internal protest that could reshuffle the cards at this decisive congress for the future of the PS.
