Jean-Luc Mélenchon's candidacy appears to be an obstacle for a large majority of French people.

According to a recent poll on the 2027 presidential election, 70% of French people believe that Jean-Luc Mélenchon is a liability for the left in the run-up to the next presidential election. This perception now extends far beyond right-wing and centrist voters and also affects a significant portion of left-wing supporters.

The leader of La France Insoumise, who has confirmed his intention to run for president again, continues to defend his legitimacy by pointing to his results in previous presidential elections. However, several opinion polls now show that a segment of the progressive electorate considers his personality too divisive to hope to unite voters in the second round against the National Rally or a centrist candidate.

The left is divided over the strategy for 2027

This distrust is fueling internal tensions within the left, where several leaders are advocating for an alternative candidate capable of broadening the electoral coalition. Raphaël Glucksmann, in particular, appears in several polls as a figure likely to rival Jean-Luc Mélenchon in the left-wing political landscape.

The leader of La France Insoumise retains a solid activist base and remains one of the main figures of the opposition. But in a highly fragmented political landscape, several analysts believe that the significant rejection he faces could complicate any strategy for a united left in the lead-up to 2027.
