Jean-Luc Mélenchon has defended Bally Bagayoko and Aly Diouara, two elected officials from La France Insoumise in Seine-Saint-Denis who were recently implicated in a scandal. The political leader believes that the accusations against them stem from "systemic racism" used as a tool for political struggle.
On X, Jean-Luc Mélenchon denounced a campaign he believes is targeting several Black figures in his movement. He drew parallels between the situations of Bally Bagayoko and Aly Diouara and those previously faced by Danièle Obono, Rachel Keke, and Carlos Martens Bilongo.
The two elected officials deny the accusations.
Bally Bagayoko, mayor of Saint-Denis since March, is the subject of a complaint filed by the anti-corruption association AC!! for suspected embezzlement of public funds and a fictitious job. The case concerns his holding both local office and a full-time position with the RATP (Paris public transport authority). The company has denied the existence of a sinecure, while the elected official maintains he received no preferential treatment.
Aly Diouara, a member of parliament and mayor of La Courneuve, is being criticized for continuing to occupy social housing despite his parliamentary allowances. He maintains that he complies with the applicable income limits, calculated based on his 2024 earnings, the year he only became a member of parliament in July. He asserts, however, that he has already begun the process of finding alternative accommodation.
