Laurent Wauquiez promised in 2025 that there would never be an alliance with Édouard Philippe. A year later, however, the president of the Republican Right group in the National Assembly announced his support for the former Prime Minister in the 2027 presidential election and even asks Bruno Retailleau to withdraw his candidacy. A spectacular political turnaround.
HE SAID…
On May 7, 2025, as a guest of Sonia Mabrouk on CNEWS, Laurent Wauquiez categorically rejected any hypothesis of rapprochement with Édouard Philippe.
When asked about the rumors of a possible ticket between Édouard Philippe and Bruno Retailleau, he replied without the slightest hesitation:
"In any case, for me and with me, that will never be the case, and I don't want it. My answer is perfectly clear. There is no ambiguity."
On the same day, he himself shared this excerpt on X with an equally explicit message:
"With me, there will never be an alliance with Édouard Philippe."
Difficult to be more clear.
HE LIED!
This Wednesday, July 1, 2026, a radical change of position. In an interview given to FigaroLaurent Wauquiez officially announces his support… for Édouard Philippe for the 2027 presidential election. Moreover, he publicly calls on Bruno Retailleau to renounce his own candidacy.
In other words, the one who asserted that there would "never" be an alliance with Édouard Philippe is now choosing to support his candidacy for the Élysée.
In politics, changes happen. But when an official states that something will "never" happen, before doing the exact opposite a few months later, it's difficult to call it a mere nuance.
The difference between Wauquiez in May 2025 and Wauquiez in July 2026 is striking. Yesterday, Édouard Philippe embodied a line with which any alliance was out of the question. Today, he would have become the best candidate for the right.
