François-Xavier Bellamy, executive vice-president of Les Républicains, stated on Sunday on franceinfo that he would "obviously" vote for the National Rally in the event of a second round of the presidential election opposing the far-right party to Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
The MEP justified his position by stating that "the greatest danger to the democratic life of our country today is La France Insoumise." He also called for combating this movement "by all possible means," in a context of political realignment on the right and with the 2027 presidential election approaching.
This stance further weakens the republican front.
This statement illustrates the evolution of a part of the French right wing with regard to the National Rally. For several years now, some political leaders have refused to automatically support a "republican front" against the far right in the second rounds of elections, particularly against La France Insoumise.
François-Xavier Bellamy's remarks could spark debate within the Republicans themselves, where positions remain divided on the strategy to adopt against the National Rally and the radical left. While polls regularly place the party of Marine Le Pen With Jordan Bardella leading in voting intentions, the question of alliances and voting instructions is already emerging as one of the major issues of the upcoming presidential campaign.
