François Ruffin, the Debout! MP for the Somme region, has stated his intention to participate in a left-wing primary for the 2027 presidential election, while also warning that he would maintain his candidacy even without an agreement among the various progressive forces. Speaking on Franceinfo this morning, the former La France Insoumise MP asserted that such a consultation remained the best way to prevent a fragmentation of left-wing candidacies.
The elected official has been advocating for several months for a broad primary encompassing all left-wing factions, from environmentalists to socialists, including more radical movements. According to him, this strategy would allow for the selection of a candidate capable of competing with the National Rally and the centrist bloc in the presidential election.
A candidacy asserted despite the divisions
François Ruffin acknowledged, however, that the possibility of a complete union remained uncertain. Several figures and left-wing parties remain opposed to holding a joint primary, particularly regarding the role of Jean-Luc Mélenchon and the strategic differences between the various factions within the New Popular Front.
Already engaged in preparations for the 2027 election, the MP is making numerous public statements on purchasing power, public services, and the working class—themes he places at the heart of his political platform. He states his intention to run a campaign focused on lower-income voters and rural areas, in a context where the left is still struggling to define a common strategy for the next presidential election.
