France-Algeria: Paris wants to return to 250.000 visas issued annually to Algerian nationals

France aims to return to the level of visa issuance granted to Algerian nationals that existed before the diplomatic crisis between the two countries. The stated objective is to return to approximately 250.000 visas per year, compared to a sharp decline since the bilateral tensions that strained relations between Paris and Algiers. This approach is part of the normalization strategy undertaken by the French authorities.

A renewed cooperation with Algiers

In an interview with the Algerian media outlet TSA, the French ambassador to Algeria, Stéphane Romatet, explained that Paris wishes to gradually resume issuing visas to Algerian citizens who meet the required conditions. According to him, the goal is to return to the pace observed before the 2024 diplomatic crisis, which had led to a significant slowdown in consular procedures.

This initiative comes as France also seeks to re-establish closer cooperation with Algiers in the areas of security, justice, and migration. However, this strategy is already drawing criticism, with some political leaders arguing that this resumption of visa issuance comes at a time when the difficulties related to the return of Algerian nationals subject to deportation orders (OQTF) remain a source of tension between the two countries.europe1.fr)
