An international summit dedicated to civil nuclear energy is being held in Paris on Tuesday, with the participation of nearly 60 countries, as well as representatives of international organizations and industrial players in the sector.
This meeting aims to revitalize the role of nuclear energy in the context of the global energy transition and carbon emission reduction targets. The initiative is led by France, which seeks to promote nuclear power as a decarbonized and strategic energy source for the future.
The Élysée Palace wants to use this meeting as a rallying point around the role of nuclear power in decarbonizing electricity and ensuring energy security for nations. The discussions should also encourage new international commitments aimed at significantly increasing nuclear capacity by 2050.
Funding and cooperation at the heart of the discussions
The discussions will focus in particular on investment issues, a central challenge for a technology that is both lengthy and expensive to deploy. Participants will also address industrial cooperation, fuel supply, and the research and development of new generations of reactors.
This meeting is part of a broader political discussion on the future of nuclear power in France. On Thursday, the President of the Republic is scheduled to chair a nuclear policy council meeting at the Penly nuclear power plant, focusing in particular on the national program for the construction of new reactors.
