Former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe has spoken in favor of the pantheonization of Samuel Paty, who was murdered in October 2020 by an Islamist terrorist near his school.
During an appearance on France 5, the mayor of Le Havre explained that he had been contacted by the teacher's sister regarding a possible initiative to have Samuel Paty interred in the Panthéon. He stated that he was ready to support her in this symbolic endeavor.
A decision reserved for the head of state
Édouard Philippe believes that the figure of Samuel Paty now transcends the mere national tribute paid after his assassination. According to him, the teacher has become a symbol of freedom of expression and the transmission of republican values.
The decision regarding his interment in the Panthéon, however, rests with the President of the Republic. Since 2020, several voices in the political and educational spheres have regularly advocated for an exceptional tribute to be paid to the history and geography teacher.
