The island of Île-Molène has finally succeeded in electing its municipal council after several weeks of institutional uncertainty. Due to a lack of candidates in the March municipal elections, this small island community in Finistère found itself without a mayor or municipal team, a very rare situation in France.
Faced with the risk of the municipality being placed under permanent provisional administration or annexed to another local authority, a list headed by Bruno Corolleur from Molène was urgently formed in recent weeks. The election held this weekend brought an end to this period of political vacuum, which had greatly worried a portion of the island's inhabitants.
An unprecedented situation for this small Breton island
Last March, no candidate came forward to take over the mayoralty of this town of approximately 170 inhabitants located off the coast of Brest. The outgoing municipal team's term thus ended without a successor, forcing the Finistère prefecture to appoint a special delegation to manage day-to-day affairs.
This lack of candidates had provoked strong emotions on the island, where many residents feared a gradual loss of administrative autonomy. Some were particularly concerned that Molène might eventually lose certain specific statuses linked to its island isolation.
A symbolic issue for the island communities
The incident reignited debates about the growing difficulties in finding elected officials in some small rural or island communities in France. Heavy administrative burdens, significant responsibilities, and low population turnover are increasingly complicating municipal successions in certain isolated areas.
In Molène, the election of the new municipal council is therefore seen as both an administrative and symbolic relief. The town thus retains its political autonomy and avoids an exceptional situation that could have led the state to consider more radical solutions to ensure its local governance.
