Charlie Kirk, 31, shot dead yesterday at a rally in Utah, had become in just a few years one of the most influential faces of the conservative movement in the United States. Founder of the organization Turning Point USA at just 18 years old, he established himself as the voice of a generation of young pro-Trump activists. His university lectures, his daily podcast, and his massive presence on social networks had allowed him to build a community of several million people.
Turning Point USA, a youth mobilization machine
Founded in 2012, his organization aimed to spread conservative values in high schools and on campuses. Over the years, Turning Point USA has become the largest activist network for Republican youth. Its political arm, Turning Point Action, played a key role in the last presidential campaign, notably through door-to-door operations in decisive states. Kirk's influence was no longer limited to student activism: he was now a key player in the Republican camp's electoral strategy.
Abortion, "holocaust of our time"
Charlie Kirk defined himself as a Christian nationalist and defended an ultra-traditional vision of the family. He was fiercely opposed to abortion, which he described as"holocaust of our time", and advocated the absolute defense of the right to bear arms. His speeches were often peppered with religious references and frontal attacks against what he called the "progressive tyranny".
His speeches on university campuses had become a trademark: in front of hundreds of supporters, he would invite his opponents to debate in order to better dismantle their arguments in front of the cameras, then fuel viral sequences on his social networks.
A close friend of the Trump clan
Near Donald Trump Jr., Charlie Kirk had gradually gained the president's trust, becoming a key player in his campaign comeback. He appeared regularly on Fox News and made numerous public appearances to defend the hardline "Make America Great Again" movement.
A master of fundraising
In addition to being an agitator of ideas, Charlie Kirk was also a true fundraiser. His organization raised tens of millions of dollars to support conservative campaigns, particularly those of Donald Trump. This money funded vast field operations designed to convince a young electorate often considered committed to the Democrats.
A controversial legacy
Admired by his supporters for his eloquence and combativeness, Charlie Kirk was also one of the most divisive figures on the American right. His opponents accused him of spreading disinformation, particularly about the 2020 election and the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the criticism, he remained a formidable strategist and a key voice in the Republican camp.
