André Santini died on Monday, June 1st, at the age of 85. The mayor of Issy-les-Moulineaux had been hospitalized since October 2025 and had not left his hospital bed for over a year. Despite his health condition, he campaigned from his hospital room for the municipal elections last March, an unprecedented situation that left its mark on the election.

An eighth term won through illness

Re-elected on March 23 for an eighth consecutive term, André Santini had led the Hauts-de-Seine municipality since 1980. His health problems had significantly impacted the results: he obtained only 44% of the vote in the first round, a score well below the 60% he received in 2020, forcing a runoff election. After his victory, he resumed his duties on March 28, appearing thinner and in a wheelchair upon his return to the town hall.

A prominent figure in the UDF and later the UDI, André Santini held several ministerial positions in the Chirac and Fillon governments. Born on October 20, 1940, in Paris, this lawyer by training also served as a member of parliament for Hauts-de-Seine from 1988 to 2017, as vice-president of the National Assembly, and had chaired the Île-de-France Water Authority since 1983. He had also been vice-president of the Greater Paris metropolitan area since 2016.
