On Monday, August 24, Alex Borg, leader of the Maltese Nationalist Party and Leader of the Opposition, received Michel Taube, founder of Opinion Internationale and Together Against the Death Penalty, and Radouan Kourak, head of the political desk at Entrevue magazine and president of the InterVision press and communications group, at the party headquarters. Kourak, who has lived in Malta for several years and now divides his time between the archipelago and Paris, is also pursuing several significant economic and entrepreneurial projects there, alongside his work in media and communications.
Warmly received by the Maltese leader, the two Frenchmen engaged in lengthy discussions with Alex Borg on the major challenges facing Malta and Europe today. European politics, the future of the continent, the economy, immigration, sovereignty, Maltese development, and the evolution of the Nationalist Party were among the central topics of their discussions.
Editor's Note: The name of the Nationalist Party can sometimes be confusing for a French reader: it is not a nationalist party in the sense that this term is generally used in French political debate. The PN is one of the two major historical parties in Malta, situated on the right and center-right. It belongs to the European People's Party (EPP), the large European center-right political family, which also includes, in France, The Republicans. The PN and The Republicans are therefore sister parties within the EPP.
During the meeting, Alex Borg presented his vision for the future of this historic party and the directions he intends to pursue in the coming years. As leader of the opposition, he plans to thoroughly modernize his party while maintaining its political identity and building a credible alternative to the Labour Party, which has been in power since 2013.
Elected leader of the Nationalist Party in September 2025, Alex Borg quickly established himself as the face of a new generation of the Maltese right. In the May 2026 general election, under his leadership, the NP significantly narrowed the gap with Labour, reducing it to around 22,000 votes, down from nearly 40,000 previously. At just 31 years old, the leader of the opposition now appears as one of the leading contenders for the position of Prime Minister in a future change of government and as one of the young European right-wing leaders to watch in the coming years.
The meeting with Michel Taube and Radouan Kourak also allowed for a broader exchange on their different worldviews and on the major political upheavals currently sweeping through Europe. Discussions focused in particular on the European economic model, competitiveness, the role of business, migration issues, the protection of national identities, and the role the European Union should play in an increasingly unstable geopolitical environment.
Discussions also focused on Malta's specific situation, where spectacular economic and demographic growth over the past decade now presents new challenges in terms of infrastructure, housing, energy, and public services. Alex Borg outlined his commitment to shifting the Maltese model towards growth based more on quality, innovation, and high value-added sectors.
Michel Taube and Radouan Kourak praised the quality of the discussions, the Maltese leader's availability, and the warm welcome they received at the Nationalist Party headquarters. Beyond immediate political issues, this meeting provided an opportunity to discuss how new generations of European leaders can strengthen their ties and share their national experiences.
It finally provided an opportunity to discuss the role Alex Borg could gradually assume on the European political scene. While the young leader intends to bring the Nationalist Party back to power in Malta, his close ties to the EPP family and his simultaneously conservative, pro-European, and reformist stance could also allow him to make his voice heard more widely beyond the archipelago's borders.
