François Fillon traveled to Lebanon this week with his association "Acting for Peace with the Christians of the East," created to support Christian minorities affected by conflicts in the Middle East. In Beirut, the former Prime Minister participated alongside volunteers in preparing and distributing 6,000 meals for the most vulnerable populations.
The former presidential candidate from 2017 wants to draw attention to the humanitarian situation in the south of the country, which has been ravaged by clashes between Israel and Hezbollah. He denounces the destruction of several villages and believes that the Lebanese crisis is now attracting less attention in Europe, despite the population displacements and deteriorating living conditions.
A commitment to the Christians of the East
François Fillon explains that his commitment stems from the persecution suffered by Christians in Iraq and Syria during the expansion of the Islamic State organization. His association aims to defend the religious and cultural diversity of the Middle East, while providing material aid to communities weakened by wars and economic crises.
During his trip, François Fillon also met with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and the French and American ambassadors. His visit comes amid heightened regional tensions, as several villages in southern Lebanon have been damaged by bombing and many residents have been forced to flee their homes.
