Social conference: between diagnosis and uncertainties, the September meeting
Social conference: between diagnosis and uncertainties, the September meeting

The government has now set September as the target date for drawing conclusions from the "Work, Employment, Pensions" conference, a broad series of discussions undertaken with social partners to inform reflections on the future of work, the labor market, and the pension system. A summary document, drafted by those facilitating the discussions, will outline the areas of agreement and disagreement following several months of debates scheduled to continue until the summer.

The government presents this initiative as a diagnostic forum rather than a formal negotiation. Discussions cover topics ranging from occupational burnout, working conditions, and employment for older workers to changes related to artificial intelligence, career transitions, and the financing and evolution of pensions. Several unions are participating, despite the boycott by the Medef (French Business Confederation), which has been absent from the process since its inception.

A social roadmap without immediate decisions
According to the presented schedule, the workshops are to continue until the beginning of summer, culminating in a final report in September intended to provide an overview of the points of agreement and disagreement between unions, the administration, and experts. The government aims, in particular, to stimulate social debate before the 2027 presidential election, without promising immediate legislative action at this stage.

Youth employment, sustainable work, end-of-career issues, gender inequalities in retirement, and the consequences of digital transformation are among the topics discussed. Participants are now waiting to see whether this session will lead to a concrete political roadmap or remain a consultation exercise without binding commitments.
