Mali: Paris denounces "baseless accusations" after French diplomat sentenced to 20 years in prison

France reacted strongly after a French diplomatic agent was sentenced to twenty years in prison by a Malian court. Found guilty of "undermining state security," the French national was also banned from entering Mali for twenty years and fined. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs immediately contested the verdict, denouncing the accusations as unfounded.

In a statement, the French Foreign Ministry reiterated that the agent in question was carrying out an official security cooperation mission at the French Embassy in Bamako. French authorities maintain that France has never been involved, directly or indirectly, in any attempt to destabilize Mali. Since his arrest in August 2025, Paris has maintained that the charges against him are unfounded.

Accusations of conspiracy against the transitional authorities

The diplomat, identified as Yann V., was arrested on August 13, 2025, during an operation conducted by Malian State Security. According to authorities in Bamako, he was arrested alongside several officers of the Malian Armed Forces. These soldiers, since dismissed from the army, are also accused of participating in a network of espionage and conspiracy against the transitional institutions.

According to the prosecution, this group was preparing actions aimed at destabilizing the government in order to facilitate a coup. The trial was held before the specialized criminal court for counter-terrorism cases. Several Malian judicial sources confirmed the verdict against the French diplomat, while the Malian officers involved in the case have not yet been tried.

A case against the backdrop of a diplomatic crisis

This conviction comes amid heightened tensions between Bamako and Paris. Since the military junta seized power following the coups of 2020 and 2021, relations between the two countries have deteriorated significantly. Malian authorities have progressively ended their military cooperation with France and forged closer ties with new partners, notably Russia.

Confronted for over a decade with the expansion of jihadist groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, Mali is experiencing a major security crisis. In this climate of distrust towards Western partners, this legal case risks further fueling diplomatic tensions between Bamako and Paris, already deeply strained in recent years.
